The Little Fish That Got Away, by Bernadine Cook
This is a silly little book about fishing that my girls seem to really like. There is tons of repitition throughout the story which makes it a great book for Sam right now. And I love the idea of a little boy bringing home dinner for his family!
Too Many Turkeys, by Linda White
I grabbed this one off the shelf because it is gettin close to thanksgiving so I thought a book about turkeys would be fun. Little did I know that this was going to be a really cute book that would involve tending to turkeys, gardening and composting. I love that the wife has a secret recipe that makes her gardens more full and beautiful than all the neighbors. The images of all the turkeys all over the yard is pretty funny too!
On Our Way Home, by Sebastian Braun
This one is for Avery (although Sam likes it too) becauase it has super simple words and big, bold pictures. Even though the text is simple there are lots of references to great outdoor play and memory making activities. We also have fun looking for things in the pictures. I ask Avery if she can find the butterfly, flower, rabbitt, etc. These images aren't hidden but are just smaller and it is good exercise for Avery's observational skills to find them and point them out to me. The hard part is keepin Sam from pointing them out first!
Stella, Star of the Sea, by Marie-Louise Gay
Love these books! Gay combines the perfect amount of silliness and factual information. This one in particular really captures a typical young child's hesitation about the ocean (which I have experienced first hand). It also captures through the big sister a great way to help little ones get over their fear of the ocean, just ignore it and give them the time that they need. The book asks questions like "Where do starfish come from?" and who wouldn't love answers like "Starfish are shooting stars that fell in love with the sea".
Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain, retold by Verna Aardema
This is a classic story about rain. And it rhymes so you know I am sold! I really like this one for Sam becauase it has slightly bigger words that cause Sam to interupt me and ask questions. The pictures are unique and beautiful. I also really like this because it describes the cloud as "all heavy with rain" which is exactly the way I describe rain to the girls. The big idea in this one is about how everything relys on rain, which is a lesson that the girls and I have been working on this year with our garden. If you haven't checked out this one you certainly should.
Time to Sleep, by Denise Fleming
We all love Fleming! It is the perfect time of year for this book because it is all about cooler temperatures coming and animals preparing for hibernation. Even though it does have animals talking to each other and behaving a bit like humans the message about hibernation and season change is portrayed in a way that little kids can understand. Plus the end of this one is super cute!
I like that turkey book. I might have to get that for my fiances daughter. She can't read yet but it's never too early to look at photos.
