"Depends on the frog!" This is a line spoken by one of the BEST environmental educators I know, David Stokes. I have the priviledge of seeing him teach several times each year at the MREA Energy Fair.
Among lots of other tips and tricks I have learned from him that line has become a part of my teaching about a lot of different animals.
Today Sam and I made a frog and then played around with the Identiflyer discovering that frogs do not all sound a like.
Sam, all on her own, started mimicking the noises of the frogs. She did a great job of trying to make noises that sounded like the frogs. I was pretty impressed!
But I think the fact that not all frogs say ribit and not all birds say tweet tweet is a pretty neat lesson to be able to teach a three year old.

Did you know that it is Earth Week? That Earth Day is just a few days away? It is kind of a big deal in the environmental education world. Sam and I have a couple of events lined up for the end of the week to help us celebrate. Are you doing anything with your little ones? There are events going on all over the country so just search at your local zoo, botanical garden, nature center, camp or local college and I am sure you can find something.
A great post that I saw today I wanted to share with you all because it really speaks to the point of why I am writing this blog, why I get outside with my girls everyday and why I want so badly for them to learn about nature. I also wanted to share my answer to that statement in her title. How would I raise kids who care about the planet? The biggest thing for me is that they have to love being out in it. They don't need to know every facet about the natural world they just have to know that it is important. Once they know that and know that they love it enough that they want to help protect it they will take the initiative on their own to learn what they can do to help. So, I am starting at the very beginning. I am getting them outside and exposing them to nature as much as I possibly can. I want it to be comfortable for them, the place where they are the most comfortable and something that they NEED to feel like themselves. I am "greening" them!

I remember when I first learned just how different frogs can sound ... and there is a great site for my local area to identify frogs by their calls. In North Australia, we have a frog called the Stonemason, because it's call sounds like someone chipping stone with a hammer.
