Day 272: trees

Sick kiddos again today. Bummer since it is finally breaking into the 40s and gorgeously sunny. But with sick little ones there was no hiking or exploring new places today.

So instead we learned about trees. We started with another Dr. Seuss, Cat in the Hat's Learning library Book, If I Ran the Rainforest by Bonnie Worth.

The vocabulary and content of this book was a bit over Sam's head but the rythm of the book, the pictures and my added questions/comments to her throughout the book, held her attention. After we read the book we made some trees of our own to create a forest for her animals to live in.

Good old toilet paper tubes and the very last paper towel tube that we had. Just cut the ends, color and presto! Instant trees!

These trees were made just like our flowers.

Then we picked out some animals to put in the forest.

Okay, so not the most accurate collection of animals that Sam picked out! But each lead to their own discussion and learning. We talked about how deer live in forests, how giraffes have long neck to eat the trees that are high up, how baby animals might hide in the forest or behind trees and how people can live in trees (hence the woman "inside" the one tree).

Great sick day activity! What do you do to fill the hours of sick days?

Other great tree books can be found in the Must See Children's Book page on the sidebar. We have some great ones that we love. I do really enjoy these Dr. Seuss learning books but they are for kids a bit older than Sam.

Hoping we will feel better tomorrow because I have some duck books that I would love to pair with an adventure to go find some real ducks! We will see.
