Busy Saturday so this might be a little bit quick but I came up with the idea of starting to track the weather with Sam. She is so interested in rain, clouds and the sky right now that I wanted to think of something we could do to enhance/encourage that interest. I created a weather chart!
Now I am NOT a crafty person. NOT AT ALL. But I am pretty darn proud of this thing! Did you see the sun? Let's take a closer look!
I mean that's adorable! Okay enough bragging! HA!
So I know it says "Weather Calendar" and I also know that it only has six boxes going across each line (hence it is not REALLY a calendar!) but since Sam doesn't understand dates and days of the week yet I wasn't really worried about that. It will act more just as a way to chart the weather each day. In the second picture you can see the blobs in the first box. That is the sun and a cloud. I asked Sam to look out the window and tell me what she saw in the sky. She said she saw a sun and clouds. So I gave her little stickers that I had made to represent the sun and one for the clouds and told her to put them in the first box. Tomorrow at about the same time I will have her look again and add more stickers. She is super excited. The "calendar" hangs right on the wall in our kitchen at her eye level. She thinks it is "Adorable!" and asks all the time if it is time to look at the weather.
Not sure where exactly this will go or how long she will stay interested in it but for now it was a fun project for me and even more fun to see how excited Sam was. I also have little rain drop stickers to put on when she sees rain.

The Nitty Gritty!
Just used scrapbooking paper to make the chart and all the details. The sun, cloud and rain drop stickers I cut free hand (like I said, I am not a crafty person so the clouds just looks like a white blob!) out of sticker paper that I happened to have. Not sure if they still make that stuff, but if you can't find that just use regular paper and a glue stick. I am sure a crafty person could make these cuter but I used up all of my creativity on that sun.
Some of the things I am excited to do with this include but are not limited to; getting her to notice things in the sky more often, noticing different colors in the clouds, practicing counting by asking her how many days we have had rain or sun or clouds, and just making observations about how much rain or sun we get. I have done a lot of weather, season and natural history type recording (phrenology!) in my science career and LOVE it. This is my way of introducing that to Sam!
I might have to do this one. L even has a weather song to the tune of "Clementine" that he learned at preschool: "What's the weather, what's the weather, what's the weather like today; is it rainy, is it cloudy, is it sunny, all day?" :)

I just showed this to Ella. She thought it was pretty cool! They did something similar every day in her kindergarten class. Maybe we'll have to do one of these! :-)
